Good employers know that the best way to keep the staff happy and combat negativity in the workplace is to offer support when needed. While many of us are friendly with our co-workers, we don’t always know what’s going on in their personal lives – and that’s okay. There are many stresses – inside and outside of the workplace – that can affect our ability to do our jobs well. While there are things you may feel comfortable talking about with your co-workers and superiors, there are other topics that you might not want to freely discuss. This is where Employee Assistance Programs come in.

Companies with an EAP in place offer employees access to services to help them overcome issues, problems, and situations that are negatively affecting their work performance and overall wellbeing. When your health is at stake, it’s important to take care of yourself. There is no shame in taking advantage of company sanctioned programs to get back on the right track. That’s what they’re intended for, after all.

Most EAP programs offer short-term counselling to employees and members of their household. You may need someone to talk to about some mental health issues you’re experiencing, or problems at home. Whether you’re going through a divorce or are having financial troubles, you don’t have to suffer in silence.

In addition to taking care of your mental health, counsellors may offer advice on other areas of your life you may be struggling with. Get health and fitness tips, money management advice, learn how to prepare for a baby, or retirement. Help is right at your fingertips. Many EAP programs offer flexible counselling over the phone, through email, or even through an online chat. These programs are 100 per cent confidential. Your employer will not know unless you choose to tell them.

Many struggle to deal with personal issues while trying to hold down a job. It can be overwhelming at times, and you can’t always keep your two lives separate. You know you’re good at your job; you’re just struggling right now. Instead of worrying about getting reprimanded at work, on top of everything else you’re dealing with, be pro-active and ask about the Employee Assistance Program.

If you’re not sure if your company offers one, don’t be afraid to ask. Sometimes just having someone to talk to can make all the difference. Employers pay into these programs, and benefits usually cover the rest, so there’s no reason to not take advantage of these services
