Whether you are out of work or just looking for a new job, the holiday season is a better time to start your search than you may think.

Popular opinion has been that job opportunities are limited due to holiday activities and vacations. However, employers don’t stop hiring just because of the holidays. In fact, some companies have an annual budget that coincides with the calendar year, which means some managers are looking to fill roles before the end of December. Additionally, you may have a better chance landing a job when others take a break from their search over the hectic holiday season, since there’s less competition from other job hunters.

Here are some job search tips to help you find a job during the holiday season.

Networking

When it comes to looking for work at any time of year, networking has proven to be one of the best ways to get a new job. In fact, according to Business Insider https://www.businessinsider.com/at-least-70-of-jobs-are-not-even-listed-heres-how-to-up-your-chances-of-getting-a-great-new-gig-2017-4 as many as 85 per cent of jobs are filled via networking. And there’s no better time to be making contacts than during the holiday season, when there are so many personal and professional functions to attend where you can reconnect with friends and acquaintances you’ve lost touch with and let people know you’re in the market for a job. Most people are happy to help you out if they know of any job openings.

Temporary, seasonal and volunteer jobs can become permanent

Taking a temporary or seasonal job can be a good way to get your foot in the door and may lead to a permanent position later. Retail-related roles and hospitality industries in particular are looking for extra help over the holidays. But since many employees want time off, many types of businesses have temporary work available at this time of year. Charities and philanthropic organizations are also busier during the holidays. Volunteering is a great way to gain experience and meet new people, and it looks great on a resume. You’ll feel wonderful helping others, and volunteering may just lead to a job.

Take advantage of time off

If you’re still working, chances are you’ll have some Christmas vacation time. This is the perfect opportunity to update your resume, references and LocalWork profile https://www.localwork.ca/register/ and let people know you’re looking for work. But remember that it’s also important to take time to spend with your family and friends. Don’t become too focused on only looking for a job and miss out on what’s important at this time of year.
