Legislative Compliance Research Assistant – Summer Student

The City of Peterborough requires all new employees, as a condition of employment, to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to their first day of employment.

This is a summer student position.

Job Details

New regulations relating to the designation and listing of heritage properties requires a full review of identified resources which must be prioritized to ensure their continues protection. The main objective of this position is to review the nearly 700 Listed properties on the City of Peterborough’s Heritage Register to determine the most efficient means of protection provided for in the revised legislation. The work will be specifically informed by other City policies and studies which identify areas for growth and development which may make heritage resources vulnerable.


The ideal candidate for this position will be pursuing a degree or diploma in History, Geography, Planning or a related field. The candidate will have excellent research and writing skills, will have good oral communication and organizational skills, as well as experience that relates to the use and interpretation of provincial legislation. Experience in a municipal or other government setting would be considered an asset. The ideal candidate will have an interest in heritage preservation and its legislative framework and a keen interest in researching, writing and organizing information. This position requires a working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite software. This position will work 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, from May 1, 2023 to August 18, 2023.

To be an eligible candidate, as stipulated by the granting agency, Young Canada Works in Heritage Institutions, the applicant must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada, be legally entitled to work in Canada, be between the ages of 16 and 30, and be registered as a full-time student, intending to return to studies in the Fall of 2023.
