Drillers are as diverse a group of people as the industry in which they work. Every drilling operation is different and requires highly skilled personnel to ensure the process is successful. The Driller knows the processes involved in successfully completing a hole and with this knowledge he is able to alter the drilling method to suit each particular application and challenges. An experienced Driller uses several senses and skills to keep track of what is happening down hole.

General duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Document and complete pre-job meetings prior to starting any work at the beginning of each shift.
  • Supervise Driller Assistant and their drill crew to ensure compliance with HSE requirements.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot a drill and ancillary equipment, including, but not limited to; trucks, support vehicles, pumps, heaters, compressors, mud re-circulation systems, etc.
  • Monitor instruments such as pressure gauges, feed or weight indicators as well as observe the volume, color and consistency of the returns from the hole.
  • Employ various sampling techniques according to project and client requirements.
  • Handle drill rods, core tubes and core samples.
  • Feel and listen for unusual sounds or vibration while drilling to recognise what is happening and adjust the procedures accordingly.
  • Mix and maintain drill muds.
  • Monitor and maintain calcium chloride content during permafrost drilling operations.
  • Record keeping as required/requested by the client and or Company.
  • Load and unload materials, supplies and tooling before and after projects.
  • Assist The Company's clients in the performance of their work, or tasks requested.
  • Direct traffic, whether on foot or vehicles, to a safe designated area protecting them, the jobsite and the client.
  • Work in the shop and/or yard when required; including the loading or unloading of supplies; painting; and other general work.
  • Housekeeping and other duties as assigned by the project manager, shop or yard staff.

General responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Work safe and use all required safety equipment including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as per Regulator, Client and Company protocol.
  • Bring required PPE and safety certificates to each project site. (i.e., hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, hi-vis coveralls, first aid certificate, etc.).
  • Complete daily pre-operation inspection reports on all drilling equipment including crew transport vehicles.
  • All equipment with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) over 5500kg's inspections must be completed (i.e. check oil levels, brakes, nuts on wheels, belts, windshield) in compliance with National Safety Code (NSC) requirements.
  • Report any malfunctioning equipment immediately to the Project Manager or Supervisor.
  • Monitor the drill site continuously for potential safety hazards.
  • Ensure Driller Assistant maintains and organizes equipment, supplies and tooling for the drill rig and support vehicles.
  • Maintain a valid driver's licence to drive the drill rig or support vehicles.
  • Take appropriate care of Geotech property and equipment.
  • Maintain a clean-cut and professional appearance which may include being clean shaven for sites requiring a respirator.
  • Behave in a professional and courteous manner specifically during all interactions with clients, regulators and members of the public.
  • Clean coveralls at the beginning of each new drilling project. Cleaning of coveralls periodically while on projects of longer duration is expected.
  • Wash and clean equipment before the start of each new drilling project. Cleaning of equipment periodically while on projects of longer duration is also expected.
  • Willingness to work weekends, out of town for extended periods and extensive hours in challenging weather and site conditions.
  • Willingness to learn and implement mechanical, maintenance and drilling abilities.
  • Be solely responsible for personal belongings. The Company will not be held responsible for employee's lost or stolen articles.
  • Ability to provide funds for Employees meals while out of town until Employees expenses are paid on their first payroll.
