The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) is the National Government of the Red River Métis - also known as the Manitoba Métis. The Red River Métis are Canada's Negotiating Partners in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba.

The MMF seeks to fill two summer term Restoration Technician positions within our Energy, Infrastructure & Resource Management Department located in Winnipeg, MB . Reporting to the Fish and Fish Habitat Coordinator, the Restoration Technician will work from various areas throughout Manitoba, mainly within Winnipeg to assist with programming of the MMF Seine River Restoration project. These actions include assisting with restoration activities, climate monitoring, tree planting, and outreach activities.

Job Duties/Competencies:
  • Work with a small team and occasionally interact with community volunteers;
  • Remove garbage and woody debris from the Seine River sometimes using a rowboat, canoe, and other tools to ensure the river is navigable;
  • Clean and maintain walking trails, riverbanks, natural spaces, and habitat restoration projects (, weeding, watering, litter removal, etc.);
  • Learn to identify and remove invasive plants (buckthorn, burdock, thistle, etc.) and plant native species along the riverbanks and at habitat restoration project sites;
  • Assist with inventories of natural features and monitoring (, photography, field notes);
  • Attend safety and other relevant training and use personal protective equipment as required (training and equipment provided).

  • Skills and Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma;
  • Post-secondary education is an asset in fields such as Environmental Studies, Natural Resources, Geography, Natural Sciences, Indigenous Studies, and Project Management;
  • Previous experience working outdoors, preferably with a non-profit Indigenous organization;
  • Previous experience in environmental activities and working in a small team;
  • Previous experience in data research, analysis, and presentation, including report writing is an asset;
  • Knowledge of historical and current Environmental and Indigenous issues is an asset;
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and time management skills;
  • Knowledge of Red River Métis culture, MMF programs and services is a definite asset; and,
  • Ability to travel, valid Manitoba Driver's license with access to a reliable vehicle.
