The Department of Biochemistry in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto invites applications for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) to investigate the genetic and biochemical characterization of telomerase.
KEY DUTIES
Coordinate efforts by a dynamic and productive team with diverse expertise Contribute directly to research via experimental design, execution, interpretation, and write-up Liaising with collaborators and assisting in the compilation, analysis and reporting of research findings to researchers within and outside of the program Preparing manuscripts for submission to peer review publications/journals Presenting findings at local, national and international conferences Assisting with research proposals to be submitted to granting agencies and progress reporting Assisting with general laboratory biosafety and maintenance, including inventories, equipment repair, ordering, and shipping reagents Training other members in the lab
Candidates are also required to assist with lab ordering and organization; supervision of students and postdoctoral fellows, preparation of manuscripts for submission to peer review publications/journals; assisting the Principal Investigator with preparation of grant applications and other reports; and presenting findings at meetings and conferences.
At all times, the individual will be expected to support the overall research and teaching missions of the lab. This position requires full-time attendance at the laboratory.
REQUIREMENTS
Candidates require a Ph.D. with demonstrated academic and research expertise in the fields of biochemistry, mammalian genetics, cell culture, and RNA-based biology Prior research experience will ideally include:
(1) characterization and reconstitution of enzymes, such as human telomerasel;
(2) designing, optimizing and performing various biochemical assays;
(3) experience in performing IC50 and other dose-dependent reactions that measure enzyme (telomerase) stability and/or activity;
(4) handling various types of mammalian cell cultures and their engineering using CRISPR or other current methodologies;
(5) designing and implementing cell-based assays to assess the in vivo properties of various human telomerase variants;
(6) mammalian cell protein expression and purification;
(7) murine genetics;
(8) familiarity with techniques involved in the isolation, imaging, and further extraction/analysis of murine tissue sections and cells;
(9) and quantitative fluorescence microscopy Candidates must also have strong and long-standing experience designing, planning and executing experiments, and in data analysis interpretation, quantification, and figure preparation Experience in other aspects of molecular biology and biochemistry including in vitro methods of protein expression and purification, RNA extraction and purification, western and Southern (telomere) blots, and fluorescence-activated cell sorting, are considered strong assets Strong organizational and communication skills are required (preferably with fluency in both official Canadian languages), as well as an established ability to work positively with others in a large multi-collaborative laboratory
This is a 2-year term position.
